Jian(間) and jin(進) were used to identify the hierarchy of the household; and, showed respect to them. The higher position of the household or the god/ the goddess are, the more Jian and jin the building has. Therefore, the number of Jian and jin can directly reflect one's social status or power.

Causeway Bay Tin Hau Temple is 3 Jian (間;the space between 2 columns) and 1 jin (進; the yard inside the building). It is also called in-between courtyard temple (Er He Yuan).
