From the legend, it says that the Tai Clan found a stone on the shore which is similar to an incense burner(紅香爐). They believe that it was being delivered by the Tin Hau. They built a small shrine for keeping it. The shine became popular then and they raised funds to build a temple at the same place.

Legend Version 2
In the early eighteen centuries, Tin Hau Temple was built in Causeway Bay by the Tai clan. Tai was the Hakka from the Danshui(淡水) Residential District in Guangdong. He first settled in the “Po Kong” village in Kowloon Bay when he came to Hong Kong. Tai always crossed the Harbor and mowed along the coast. It is said that the Tai clan received a statue from the coast. Tai then built a shrine
for worshiping. After some time, more and more people venerated the statue. The funds raised from the votaries were finally able to construct a formal Tin Hau Temple.
